Gerry Moss: Biography

Gerry started to play guitar while in England at the age of six. He had watched an entertainer playing a guitar in his performance and he was hooked. He didn’t know how to play, but he instantly knew he wanted a guitar. 

He attended a private high school, where he began to write music.  He wrote some rock tunes for a high school show that were accepted very well. He began to perform in talent shows and started to attract attention as a performer.

In addition to guitar, Gerry is accomplished on banjo, mandolin, bass guitar, Dobro guitar, and keyboards.

Gerry is also a very capable engineer and producer in the recording studio.

He has enjoyed teaching young people learn and perform music with a patience and enthusiasm that has inspired them to become all they can be. 

Gerry can perform and headline either as a single artist accompanying himself on guitar and/or keyboards or with his band, MOSSMAN which performs as a 3 or 4 piece group.

Each member of MOSSMAN contributes enormous skill and experience to the group. MOSSMAN is a loose connection of four guys who live in four different towns in three different states GERRY was born in Massachusetts in July, 1950 to an Air Force father. He was the oldest of 8 children. As a musician, Gerry has lived in Europe, New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Ft Worth, Houston, and Hardy, Arkansas.

Gerry’s first love is the blues.  This is clearly evidenced by the MOSSMAN video.  On the “Music” page of this site you can hear clips of Gerry performing solo on old standards, some blues tunes, and recent music he has co-written and recorded. 

They never see each other except to play. They perform with abandon, yet are very tight. Their performances are liberated but not reckless.

Gerry also performs with the Red Barn Ramblers, a group of thirteen outstanding musicians.  In the past, this group gathered a couple times a year for the simple privilege of playing together.  In July of 2011, The Red Barn Ramblers performed a benefit concert at Georges Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, AR.  Funds raised quintupled the goal.   There had never been that kind of a vibe in the venue, ever.  The Red Barn Ramblers are again scheduled to perform at Georges Majestic Lounge for March 2, 2012. 

One of Gerry’s previous bands, “The Famous Unknowns,” was the house band at B.B. Kings Blues Club in Memphis, TN for 2½ years. A subsequent band, Gerry Moss and the Drive was also a regular at B.B. King's.

At one time, due to his popularity and demand, Gerry performed up and down Beale St. headlining at  as a single or with a band so often and at so many different venues and events that he was referred to as “The Iron Man of Beale Street.”

Gerry has performed in shows with rhythm and blues artists such as: Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, Rufus Thomas, Lloyd Price, Richie Haven, Robbie Krieger from The Doors, Edgar Winter, Joe Walsh, Stevie Winwood, Johnny Rivers, Mose Allison, Albert King, Leon Russell, and Buddy Guy.

Gerry has also performed with country artists such as:  Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams, Jr., and Clint Black’s band.  Also, at one time Gerry was the bass guitar player with Lloyd Price (Personality, Stagger Lee, Lawdy Miss Claudy).
